baby steps

I've been busy with my shop lately--and have just started yet another blog, this one tied in to Dreamwylde. I love reading other's blogs, but when it comes down to it and I'm tired at night, I'd rather read other ones than work on my own ;) Thus not quite blogging regularly anymore. My new blog is here, if you would like to see it.

The kids are growing acres and acres lately! Liam learned to walk, and it's the cutest thing--he get's so delighted with himself that he's able to do so, you can tell he is having a ball. He stands there for a minute in utter delight, then charges forward and starts giggling, until he inevitably falls to the floor :) I forgot how much fun it was to watch those first few steps.

Until I can get one of him walking, here's one of what he's been best at these past 13 months...

laying down :)

And a few of the other two...

The pic above is Addie and Liam and I having fun with the camera on my
iphone, where you can reverse it so you can see yourself on the phone. Can
you tell they were having fun? ;)

Finally...

I have my first item up in my etsy shop!

It only took about 2 hours and I have literally so many things I can list, thanks to my flea/thrift obsession...which will take forever, I'm sure...but so what?! It's exciting to finally have been able to do it. As I told Nate, even if I never sell a thing, it's fun--it's nice to have a creative project to work on :) I've been wistfully dreaming about it for so long!

This year

This is me, Christmas--what must it be? 1985 maybe? That would put me at around 7 years old. As you can see, I was holding my new Cabbage Patch doll, which I adored. Although I don't remember that particular holiday, I do remember that doll.

The concept of childhood is somewhat bittersweet to me. That's why this picture strikes me so, I think; even though my expression in it is likely because I was sleepy (we wait until midnight on Christmas Eve to open gifts), it seems like an appropriate metaphor for my childhood. Outwardly, things looked normal--as with this, holding my new toy. Yet the "smile" I wear never seems to make it to my eyes. It seems, to me, like a guarded smile--cautious. That element was already there inside of me, of that I am sure.

Growing up, I felt a lot of loneliness, pain, and low self-esteem. Even as a kid, I can recall thinking so lowly of myself. I felt outside the "normal realm" of things and people. The world was scary. I feared elevators and the dark. Later on, in my teens, I began experiencing panic attacks and anxiety.  My phobias grew. "What's wrong with me?" is a refrain I've been asking myself since I was very young. I was also very, very shy, in large part because of my low self-esteem. Fearing what others would think of me, especially because of my shyness, I turned inward. Books were a nice diversion, and I took to them with ferociousness. That's where my love of reading, writing, and poetry were born.

For the majority of my life, I've been dealing with the after-effects of being sexually abused by a close relative. At times I've made a good effort of pushing it all as far back as possible. I think as I grew up, and became older, I learned to live with it in some ways...and in some ways, with the help of a trusted therapist, I was able to conquer some of that hurt inside of me. But eventually I stopped going, because it was just too hard, too scary, to face what was done to me.

I feel like my soul has been longing for something in some way for a long time. I suppose it's like that tired-but-true cliche: the truth shall set you free. I've been hard on myself for a long time now, and the truth is, I'm a little weary. Life has shown me that, despite the things that hurt us most, there are so many incredible gifts available to those that look for them. My kids--they are the most important things in my life. I'm still amazed that I have them sometimes, that they're really here--my three little babies. I feel like I owe it to the kids somehow to try and do this. I want them to know by example that they are worth certain things. My one hope in life is that they don't ever experience the level of anxiety, depression, and ill-ease in the world I have at times. I want them to know that the spirit can soar despite the heavy things that life can bring.

Recently, I had my first counseling session in about a year, after giving up yet again. My wonderful therapist, Richard, has a book we are to work through, called "The Courage to Heal." It seems a lot of people he works with just eventually give up on it. One person left the book outside his office door one day, and never came back. He showed me the stack of abandoned workbooks he had, and it made me incredibly sad, thinking of those people who for whatever reason couldn't face it--and the fact that their lives would undoubtedly suffer for it.

This year, I resolve to get through the workbook. I'll call it my New Year's resolution, partly in jest...but truly, it's time. I think of Anais Nin's beautiful phrase "and the day came when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." It's been something I've been carrying with me for far too long.

I've never shared anything this personal on my blog, but I wanted to hold myself accountable in a way. I can't give up this time. Anything less is unacceptable.

I know the nature of life, and that we all carry our burdens. May this new year be a time of dreams and hopes and magic for you. May your burden become a little easier. May the things that have been lost to you long, if any, come back to you again.

"Love after Love"    (by Derek Walcott)

The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other's welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was yourself.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Liam's vocabulary

I think after the usual first words of "mama" and "dada," it's always anyone's guess what a baby's first words will be. Needless to say, I was kind of amazed when he repeated a certain word one day...no, it wasn't a bad one! ;) You'll just have to see to find out...

Wow, what a holiday season this has been! We've been enjoying everything immensely, even with the normal state of "chaos" that is raising three under 3 amped up a bit. Things have been busy. I hope you enjoyed your special get-togethers with family & friends, and have some beautiful memories as a result :)

My newest project as of late is painting a little doll cradle I found for Addie. It was a very plain and bare wood, but it caught my eye because it was so classically adorable. The day after finding it, my sister found a gorgeous doll that looks vintage (at the flea market also) and it just seemed totally kismet.

Addie is having great fun helping me paint it pink. I bought a wooden plaque at
Michael's which I'm going to paint and glue on. It has room to write something on it, so I thought
I'd paint "Baby Doll" on there...for the obvious reason, but also because it is one of my fave
nicknames for Addie.

We'll post pics when we're done with it!

Lastly I wanted to share these pics of Addie...

....this is one of the very (and I mean very) few times I've straightened her hair. Even then it still
has a lot of wave to it, her hair is so curly. It just seems so funny how different she looks to me
just by doing that.

And yes, that is Liam shoving his sister into the oven. What else is a little brother to do? ;)

Which reminds me, I also bought another doll because it had the most adorable, chubby face...
little did I know when I undressed it that it was a perfect replica of Liam's bottom! Too special,
don't you think? :P

Hope your holidays were great!

Past Picture Perfect

I've been taking more pictures of my "old junk" lately, the type to be used for my Etsy shop...if I ever get the time to create it! In the meantime, it's still fun to (buy and) photograph it, even if for now, both item and picture will be stored away for "someday."

ladies and ladies

What I love about blogs, like many people, are the friends you meet and get to know through reading them. I think it's fun when someone shares a little peek into their life by telling the story behind something. The other day I stopped by my friend Laura's blog (called Rhinestone Armadillo--stop by, it's fab!) and mentioned my recent flea market score, a lady head vase...so, I thought I would share some pictures of my bedroom, where the vase resides, and some projects I'm working on.

Our walls aren't really this blue, they just look so because of the effect I used on the picture...it makes me wish they were, though.

It's amazing and kind of funny to me how many of my things are flea market finds. The floral picture in the whitewashed frame, far left, is actually a beautiful needlepoint piece I found. Underneath it is my old kitchen stool, found there too. The mirror with the cute raised dot frame is from the flea, as is the tiny picture right above it.

Ha ha...can you guess what we were watching by looking at the reflection?

Did anyone recognize Lightning McQueen?
Yep...it's Cars! You can pin that one on Mr. Jakey.

I love the lavender sign. I won it in a blog giveaway. Rather than use a
jewelry box, I hang my necklaces on an iron hook decoration I like, made
to look like birds sitting in a row.

Here's a closer look at the vase, which cost me $2...it's unmarked, but I never care about stuff like
that anyway. I thought she was pretty and would look very smart on my dresser.

Also on the dresser is one of my most favorite things, which is the The Arc de Triomphe cookie jar my sister gave me. I store things inside of it (not cookies, even though I totally should), and also use the top as a little knick knack center.

Perfumes, a little fairy figurine for Addie, a picture of Jacob, a lock of Liam's hair, and in the largest photo--Mae. A dear, sweet woman I knew and loved.

I LOVE playing with Picasa, can you tell? ;)

My first Lefton find...this little strawberry basket. It's very cute, but it looks a little odd in this pic!
Something about the strawberries.

I didn't realize until now that I bought two lady vases that day...$1 for this one.

One thing I've had my eye open for at the flea lately is vintage purses. This is one I found
and have been waiting for the time to fancy up a little.

You can't tell by these pictures, but it is small and the leather has a cool slightly worn look to it. There's something sweet about it and it's one thin little handle.

These are some of the things I'm contemplating using on it...

My favorite amongst them is the old Audubon society pin.

This is a another small bag I'm working on...not ideas for it yet, though, except
maybe putting this owl brooch on it.

Whooo knows how the bags will turn out? Ok, seriously. Did you think I wouldn't? It was too perfect.

Thanks for stopping by! ;)

p.s....and why am I still having spacing problems with my posts? Oh blogger...I love you and yet I hate you at the same time.
